5 Essential Contents of a Healthy Grocery Shopping List

The aisles in supermarkets and grocery stores are specifically designed to tempt the shopper into buying food stuffs they had originally no intention of buying. Even the checkout counter is stacked with chocolates, snacks etc to get shoppers to pick them up as the bill is being totalled up.

The most important point that you as a shopper would have noticed is that most of these food stuffs are high in calories, sugar/salt, preservatives etc (read unhealthy). If you have chosen to go on a healthy diet this spur of the moment buying can end up jeopardising your good intentions. So now the question arises as to how you can avoid these unplanned and unhealthy food choices. Studies have shown that the best way to avoid temptation while walking down the shopping aisles is to have a well planned grocery list filled with healthy choices in hand. Let us go ahead and take a look at the main food items this healthy grocery list should contain.

  1. Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and Vegetables should be at the top of your list. It is advisable to go in for organic and in season fruits and vegetables because this not only ensures that they are free of pesticides but also that you get to enjoy these products at their flavourful and nutrient best.

  1. Rice/Wheat
Staples in the Indian diet, rice and rotis are consumed on a daily basis. However in recent years we have seen people make a conscious shift back to their roots in relation to their choices in varieties of rice and atta. Here is how you can make a similar shift in your grocery list:
    • For rice, replace the polished varieties with traditional varieties like brown/red/black rice,  matta rice, kullakaar rice etc which retain more of their nutrient content
    • For atta, choose the whole wheat or multigrain variety over the normal variety

  1. Millets
Rich in vitamins and minerals, millets have been an integral part of the Indian diet for centuries. The following types of millets can form part of your grocery list:
    • Pearl Millet (Bajra)
    • Foxtail Millet (Kangni)
    • Finger Millet (Ragi)
    • Sorghum Millet (Jowar)

  1. Dals and Pulses
An excellent source of plant based protein, pulses and dals also contain a whole range of other nutrients. It is also advisable to opt for their organic versions due to the fact that there are no pesticides used in the cultivation of organic pulses/dals, thereby ensuring they retain all their nutrient goodness.

  1. Salt and Sugar
Salt - Here also the organic varieties ensure you get to enjoy the purer taste of salt. Buying a smaller quantity than usual is advisable due to the need to moderate the amount of salt used while cooking (to avoid any health issues).
Sugar - While organic brown sugar is preferable to the polished white variety, organic jaggery is a healthier option since it is sourced from sugarcane grown without the addition of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. This type of jaggery retains all its inherent goodness in the form of vitamins, proteins, minerals etc.
Making these items an integral part of your grocery list will ensure you take the first step in establishing your healthy lifestyle.
