Feeling Bloated? The Grains In Your Diet Could Be A Reason Behind It

Did you know that people first began eating grains about 75,000 years ago? The first-ever grains included einkorn and emmer, which are ancestors of today’s wheat.

Grains are one of the most important sources of nutrients, complex carbohydrates, dietary fibre, several vitamin B like thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and folate and minerals like iron, magnesium, and selenium.

They help in keeping your weight under check, reduce the risk of heart ailments, control blood sugar level and fight chronic inflammation.

While whole grains offer a complete package of health benefits; some people who are gluten intolerant, suffer from difficulty processing complex carbohydrate, CCI, or a lack of enzymes might experience indigestion, diarrhoea, cramps or abdominal pain after eating grains.

All about grains

Grains are nothing but seeds and fruits of cereal grasses that are efficient at transforming sunlight, fertilizer, water, and air into macronutrients.

Wheat, maize, rice and barley are the major food contributors in our food supply. Every 4 pounds of cooked whole grains provide about 1600 calories.

Grains are categorized into whole grains and refined grains. Whole-grains consist of three main parts: the bran, germ and the endosperm whereas, a refined grain has had the bran and germ removed, leaving just the endosperm.

This makes whole grains more nutritious and healthier than refined grains.

Some grains that are easy to digest are:

  • Quinoa
  • Buckwheat
  • Rice
  • Oats
  • Amaranth

Others that you need to be wary of are:

  • Wheat (includes wheat varieties such as spelt, Kamut, farro, durum, semolina and bulgar)
  • Barley
  • Rye
  • Oats – they do not technically contain gluten but could be processed with highly gluten-containing grains

Why is it hard to digest them

Grains evolved to last throughout the year which is why it’s difficult to digest them.

Grains are seeds. Grains are nothing but seeds that are not meant to be eaten as they could stay intact in the stomach for years. They are meant to stay as they are until they grow into another plant.

Grains are made of complex proteins. Grains contain a complex protein called gluten that is super hard to digest. No matter how hard the stomach tries, the protein cannot be broken down into simpler forms for the body to digest and absorb them.

Grains have enzyme inhibitors. An enzyme inhibitor is a molecule that disrupts the normal reaction pathway between an enzyme and a substrate. Grains slow down or stop the action of enzymes that act as a catalyst for digestion.

Grains contain an anti-nutrient. Grains contain phytic acid that blocks the absorption of important nutrients. For example, if you snack on nuts between meals, the amount of iron, zinc and calcium you absorb from these nuts may get impacted.

So, is the elimination of grains from your diet a way around this? Well, no! You can sprout, soak or ferment whole grains before you cook them. This will pre-digest the proteins in grains and also neutralize other problems mentioned above.

You can also consider the organic whole grains as they’re not processed and are rich in nutrients compared to refined grains.
