Organic Grocery Shopping Guide 2020

Did you know that according to a study carried out by the Food and Drug Administration, more than 75% of fruits and more than 50% of vegetable samples have pesticide residues?

With a growing population, there is an increase in the demand for food supplies. To meet this demand farmers use excessive chemicals to increase their yield within the shortest period of time.

Hence, switching to organic foods can be the wisest and most beneficial decision to make. Organic foods are rich in nutrients, grown without chemicals, help conserve and protect water, reduce carbon footprint, slow climate change, combat serious soil problems and the list goes on.

While shopping for organic products can seem a little complicated, with proper research and understanding it can become an easy activity.

Here are a few things to keep in mind while shopping for organic essentials:

  • Understand what organic really means. A lot of people confuse organic and natural foods. Organic foods are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fungicide, or fertilizers. Whereas, the tag of “natural” or “100% natural food” implies that no artificial ingredients are used in the food product.

  • Check the label. In India, Indian Organic is a mark of assurance for organically grown food and processed food made in India.

Also, there is a government portal called Jaivik Bharat that has an integrated database jointly developed by FSSAI, APEDA and (PGS-India) on Organic food standards, certification processes, information relating to FBOs, their products and geographical areas in which they are available.

  • See where the food is coming from. Try to find out information about the source of production- it should be professional and proficient. You can also check up on the provenance and validity of the organic grocery store.

  • Avoid shopping in bulk. Buying organic food in bulk could pose the problem of it getting spoiled faster. So, go for smaller quantities and do keep them sealed.

  • Check for the organic percentage. Organic percentages of food can vary from 50% to 100%. The term 100% organic means the product is made in a chemical-free environment.

  • Check the nutrient value. Organic food is rich in nutrients & antioxidants and has a comparatively lower amount of nitrates. So quickly go through the nutritional value to ensure the credibility of the product.

  • Get help when you go shopping. With so many companies and different greenwashing tactics, shopping for organic products can get difficult. So, ask questions at the store about the product, label or anything that you don’t understand.

  • Shop online to avail coupons and discounts. Organic food can be expensive but online stores offer better deals than their brick-and-mortar counterparts. Ideally, stick to one grocery or online supermarket as they offer discounts and rewards to their loyal shoppers.
