Organic Spring Foods That’ll Keep You Healthy & Merry!

Spring is here! It’s the time to get lost in the cheery chirping of birds, in the blossoming bloom of flowers and in the savouries of the season. Speaking of savouries, we bring you organic spring foods, primarily fruits and vegetables, that will add more flavour to this beautiful season and get your body and immunity prepared for the harsh summer.

Let’s begin with some fruity organic spring foods!

  1. Strawberries: Why don’t you give your spring a radiant start? Bite into a fresh, ripe, fragrant and delicious strawberry which is one of the top 5 sources of antioxidants, regulates blood sugar despite being a fruit(talk about natural sugars being healthy) and polyphenols which strengthen immunity and healthy cell renewal.

What’s the best way to indulge?
Apart from gobbling them raw, you can make smoothies or a rich frozen chocolate dessert by dipping them into melted dark chocolate and freezing them, you can also add them to to your oatmeal or chia seed pudding (the ultimate plant based protein, rich in Omega 3 fiber and good carbs). Sorry for the pudding plug-in but it’s a must try! And with strawberries as your wingmen, you’re good to go!

  2. Figs: These miniature melons are sweet bursts of juicy and luscious in your mouth! Don’t let the size of this spring fruit fool you, these garden fruits are delicious lumps of nutrition are fiber rich and loaded with potassium. They reduce constipation and skin infections. They’re great weight-loss buddies and also help regulate blood pressure and reduce the risk of losing vision in seniors.

What’s the best way to indulge?
Add them to your cereals, desserts, and salads. Dried figs also make a great midday snack. Or if you fancy fig for appetisers, try stuffing them with pomegranates and any soft cheese. You could enjoy them raw and cold or you could bake them for 10-15 minutes and have them warm.

  3. Apricots: Its velvety-peach coat and creamy flesh sucks you in for good! Cholesterol-lowering fiber, potassium, vitamin A and phosphorus make up the Apricot armageddon which detoxify your digestive system and keep you energised.

What’s the best way to indulge?

Again, the apricot can be your Man Friday in your cereals, salads & desserts.
Dried apricots are great for mid-morning or pre-workout snacks, they blend well with your favourite dry fruits like walnuts, almonds and peanuts. If you’re looking for a salty boost, give cubed cheese, whole wheat crackers and dried apricots a try!

Let’s see which vegetables make it to the organic spring food list:

  1. Fenugreek/Methi: Methi is an all-rounder when it comes to health, right from digestion to weight loss and skin remedies and cholesterol control, and so is a must have in your diet. Methi is not tasty per say but can turn any dish into a healthy one.

What’s the best way to indulge?

Methi aloo is a favorite of many. Everyone knows aloo/potatoes can never disappoint, and cooked along with some finely chopped spicy fenugreek leaves, you’ve got yourself a nutritious sabzi. Best enjoyed with steaming hot chapatis, which you’ll lose count of and you’ll have only these magical green leaves to blame! Methi pakoras make for great appetisers and if you wish to give your regular aloo paratha a miss and go in for something more healthy, light and nutritious-give methi parathas a try.

Take a South India swig at methi with the sweet and sour methi chutney that’s a great accompaniment with parathas, rice and idlis!

  2. Radish: Not many are aware of the various health benefits radish possesses. It’s a chock full of dietary-fibre, an immunity booster and highly skin friendly (mainly because of its high water content).

What’s the best way to indulge?

Apart from the cliche mooli ke parathe in the north and radish sambar in the south, radish can be devoured in many other delectable ways. For eg,you can slice them super-thin and toss them into salads, roast them with brown butter and lemon and enjoy as an appetiser or give your midday sandwich the richness of radish, cut it paper thin and sprinkle some sesame and ginger on top!

You can also treat yourself to the chilled radish soup on a cold night!

  3. Parwal/Coccacia/Pointed Gourd: It has a lot of names but a lot of health benefits too. It’s a blood purifier and regulates Kapha, big time! Reduces flu, improves digestion and is a great aid in weight-loss.

What’s the best way to indulge?

If you want to give the regular parwal sabzi a miss, you can give parwal soup a try; it’s known to be a traditional source of medication among the Nepalese community. Boiled parwal along with potatoes make for a great stew. You could also enjoy this healthy spring vegetable in the South East Asian style - stir fry, cooked in coconut milk or steamed.

**Organic Super-Spring Food Tip** Apart from fruits and vegetables, millets are great to gear you up for the summer. Especially Ragi. This whole-grain, gluten-free millet is a popular farmer diet, but is now gaining popularity in the mainstream too. From ragi rotis, to biscuits and cakes, this millet is a must have organic spring food!
