Varieties Of Organic Mangoes & Their Growing Popularity

Before we look at the reasons for the growing popularity of organic mangoes, let us give you a glimpse into the historical link between mangoes and the land of its origin India.

History of Mangoes

Rightfully known as the national fruit of India, mangoes are native to this country and have been cultivated and eaten here since ancient times. Numerous traders and travellers to India then took the mangoes back to their countries and in this way mangoes became popular all over the world.

Even the name mango has its origins in India. The Portuguese (among the earliest to trade with India) first landed in Kerala where they were so taken up with mangoes that they carried it back to their country. It was from the Malayalam name for the fruit  ‘Maanga’ that the Portuguese coined the term ‘Mangoes’ and the rest as they say is history!

Reasons for Growing Popularity of Organic Mangoes

Now there is growing public awareness about the harmful practices of conventionally grown mangoes like artificial ripening by dangerous chemicals like calcium carbide (which pose a serious health hazard). This has led to an increasing demand for the organic varieties which bring back all the traditional goodness in terms of taste and health benefits. Also Indians settled abroad wanting a taste of their childhood summers sans any chemicals are a major driving force behind the growing popularity of organic mangoes.

Popular Varieties of Organic Mangoes

Each state has its own unique varieties which are popular not only within the state but also nationally and some even internationally. Here we will take a look at 7 varieties of organic mangoes (organically cultivated and naturally ripened) which are hugely popular in the national and international market.

1. Organic Alphonso

This variety of mango is cultivated in the Konkan belt (predominantly the Ratnagiri region) of Maharashtra.  The Alphonso mango with its golden yellow skin, amazing aroma and flavour is highly regarded not only all over India but also internationally, and is exported to many countries.

2. Organic Dasheri

This mango variety gets its name from the village of Dasheri (located in the Lucknow district) where it originated in the 18th century. Though Dasheri is now grown in a few other states in India, Uttar Pradesh remains the largest producer.  This mango variety identified by its long oval shape and golden yellow skin, along with a fibreless and flavourful pulp finds a huge market in South East Asian countries.

3. Organic Neelam

Mostly cultivated in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, they are distinguished by their large oblong shape and golden yellow skin. The pulp in addition to being fibreless is amazingly fragrant and sweet tasting.

4. Organic Mallika

A hybrid of the dasheri and neelam mangoes, this variety contains similar characteristics of the parent varieties like its large oblong shape and an exceptionally sweet fibreless pulp.

5. Organic Banganapalli

Taking its name from the town (Bangana Palli) located in Andhra Pradesh where it is grown this variety was the first to get the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. One of the larger mango varieties, banganapalli is oval-shaped with a golden yellow skin and a juicy fibreless pulp.

6. Organic Raspuri

This popular variety is grown in and around Bengaluru, Kolar and Tumakuru among other districts of Karnataka. Large and oval-shaped with a reddish yellow skin, raspuri is known for its extremely juicy and sweet pulp (making it apt for making milkshakes, juices, ice-creams, jams etc).

7. Organic Malgova

Grown predominantly in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Malgova is distinguished by its significantly large round shape with a greenish skin with just a hint of red. The pulp is sweet with just a hint of tartness.

The varieties mentioned here are only a few of the amazing varieties of organic mangoes available in the market this summer.  So go ahead and enjoy the pure flavour and inherent goodness of mangoes as it was meant to be enjoyed since ancient times.
